"Looking back on more than 30 years of Amway in China, I am convinced that lasting success is built on mutual trust, mutual respect and solid partnerships," Michael Nelson, global president and CEO of Amway, told People's Daily ahead of President Xi Jinping's state visit to the United States.
Nelson said that when U.S. and Chinese companies focus on creating social value and building bridges between the two peoples, they can enhance mutual understanding and trust and share opportunities -- benefits that extend beyond the companies to both peoples and the global economy.
Amway entered China more than 30 years ago and has witnessed rapid economic development and profound changes in the consumer market. Nelson said China has grown from an important growth market into one of Amway's most strategically significant core markets worldwide.
"The vast opportunities of the Chinese market and Amway's deep roots here leave us full of expectation and confidence in the future. We will continue to firmly root ourselves in China and invest in China for the long term," he said.
Nelson summarized Amway's China journey with four keywords: rooting, sharing opportunities, local innovation and long-termism. In 1992 the company broke ground on its first plant in the Guangzhou Development District; today the Guangzhou production base is Amway's largest manufacturing hub globally and the only one able to produce its full product range, supplying more than 50 markets and accounting for 55 percent of global output.

Amway has increased capital in China ten times, building a localized chain spanning R&D, production, sales, experience and service.
"China's vibrant business environment nurtures win-win opportunities," Nelson said, adding that local innovation is the key driver of Amway's results. "China has strong innovation capability, resilient market vitality and a fast-iterating consumer market, which continually shape our innovation direction, service model and business format."
Nelson attended the China Development Forum 2026 this spring, where he discussed the 15th Five-Year Plan, opening up and global cooperation with business leaders. He said the plan's emphasis on building a Healthy China, along with China's focus on innovation and upgrading consumer demand, aligns closely with Amway's business direction in the country.
Amway will continue investing in health and wellness, R&D, digital capabilities and supply chain optimization, while developing local talent and partnerships, he said.
