The Tongjiang railway port, China’s youngest China-Europe freight train port, is showing strong momentum. By June 23, it had handled 680 inbound and outbound freight trains and 2.529 million tons of cargo this year, including 128 China-Europe freight trains carrying 115,724 tons — up 191% and 95.3% year-on-year, the port said.

Located in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province in Tongjiang city, less than 10 km from the confluence of the Heilongjiang, Songhua and Wusuli rivers, the port opened in November 2022. As a national first-class port, it connects southward to the three northeastern provinces and the whole country, is the only port in China linked abroad via a cross-river railway bridge, and is a key logistics corridor of the Belt and Road’s Heilongjiang land-sea Silk Road Economic Belt.

Freight business has kept expanding since opening. At first the port only handled coal and iron ore concentrate imports; the first outbound China-Europe freight train departed in July 2023, and two-way services were achieved that October, making Tongjiang the sixth border railway port in China to open China-Europe freight trains.

Cargo has grown from a single feed category to dozens of products including aluminum ingots, auto parts and food. Goods from Changsha, Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin and Shanghai converge here, with trains reaching Russia and many European countries — an important window of opening along the border.

Since the station opened, gantry cranes at the transshipment yard have grown from 12 to 28, plus 4 new high-frame crawler excavators. In 2025 the container transshipment yard was expanded and upgraded, now with 2 standard-gauge and 2 broad-gauge tracks, 5 gantry cranes and 1 reach stacker across 80,100 square meters — a leap in transshipment capacity.

The Jiamusi-Tongjiang railway upgrade is underway. Upon completion, 7 new stations will be added and effective platform track length raised to 1,050 meters, accommodating extra-long heavy-haul trains.
