Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said on April 8 that the country’s first melamine project invested by a Chinese company is an important milestone in Indonesia’s downstream industrial development.

In a video address at the groundbreaking ceremony, Hartarto said the project will process Indonesian-produced natural gas into liquid ammonia and extend further downstream, strongly supporting agriculture, chemicals and other strategic manufacturing, while creating export opportunities and raising Indonesia’s global competitiveness.

The project is invested by Jiabo United Technology, the Indonesian holding company of Sichuan Golden Elephant Chemical Industry, located in the Gresik special economic zone in East Java, with investment of about $600 million. It will fill Indonesia’s melamine market gap and build a full-chain industrial ecosystem.

Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong said energy-chemical industry chains, as a key link between energy resources and agricultural production, are of growing strategic importance. The project will raise Indonesia’s energy-chemical industry level, strengthen self-reliant supply of key products like fertilizers, promote regional economic development and contribute to Indonesia’s industrialization.
