An affordable housing project built by a Chinese company broke ground on Hulhumale in the Maldives on the evening of March 21, attended by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, several cabinet ministers, members of the People’s Majlis and Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua.

After the ceremony, President Muizzu told the Chinese side he thanked China for its valuable support for improving the Maldivian people’s livelihood and looked forward to deepening cooperation to launch more projects benefiting the people.

Housing Minister Ali Muthalib said the project is a key part of the Maldives’ housing program to solve livelihood problems, and that Chinese companies, with professional strength, have become important partners in the government’s livelihood undertakings — their help is worth remembering.

The project comprises 1,224 housing units, built by Sinomach Engineering Group, located on Hulhumale — an artificial island formed by land reclamation whose key function is to relieve the capital Male’s population crowding and housing shortage.
