Key tip: Pain-relief patches, embroidery and regional specialties are filling the suitcases of foreign visitors, turning small luggage into a window on China's inbound consumption boom.

"China Haul" -- the trend of unboxing purchases made in China -- remains hugely popular on overseas social platforms. Increasingly, foreign visitors are seeking out traditional therapeutic products, regional handicrafts and local specialties.

Luis, a staff member of Mexico's national diving team, returned from a business trip to China with a suitcase packed full. "The quality is good and the prices are very reasonable. Our diving team uses Chinese products for physiotherapy and training," he said.

The products he buys are analgesic plasters and medicated oils -- everyday necessities for divers coping with muscle strain and joint pain from high-intensity training. Their visible effect and affordable price have won over the whole team.

Serbian tourist Enes prefers browsing local markets for products with regional and cultural character. "I've bought ceramics, locally produced tea, very distinctive items -- some to keep as souvenirs, others for friends who haven't been to China," he said, quoting a Serbian saying that China offers everything "from a needle to a locomotive."

He also buys clothing with Eastern elements, including a jacket released only in China. "Many international brands create specific styles for the Chinese market. This one you simply cannot buy anywhere else."

Italian traveler Gianluca Salvigi, on his first visit to China, picked up a goat's-milk soap infused with flowers in Xinjiang and commissioned a piece of embroidery bearing the characters for "Tianchi" (Heavenly Lake) as a gift for his mother.

Data shows that in the first seven months of 2026, overseas visitors spent 263.6 billion yuan in China, up 27.8 percent year on year. The number of foreign travelers claiming departure tax refunds more than tripled, while refund sales rose about 60 percent.

Visa-free policies, easier payments and departure tax refunds have steadily improved the inbound shopping experience. For many visitors, what they carry home is no longer just a product but a tangible, shareable piece of China.
